Hard work pays off for visually impaired bowlers at World Championships
|
The intensive training of the Hong Kong lawn bowls team (Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled) paid off as they secured a gold and a silver medal at the IBBA World Bowls Championships held from 20 to 31 March in Cape Town, South Africa.
Kwok Wing took top prize in the B4 men's singles, while Li Chi-ming was second in the B2 category.
"It is a very high level competition held every four years, with the participants mainly from non-Asian countries," said Head Coach Lee Fong-kiu, who put her athletes through a specially focused training regime in an attempt to emulate the conditions in South Africa as closely as possible.
"In the build-up, we trained on a real grass field for targeted training to enhance each player's skills," she added.
"To get a feel for the real grass, we used the lawn bowls training field at the Kowloon Cricket Club, trying to enhance our players' talents and also work on their tactics, to focus on opponents' weaknesses."
"Australia and South Africa are the main rivals, and we can learn from their strong adaptability," added Lee. "Hopefully we can learn from their skills and tactics to enhance the competitiveness of our players in the international arena."
And with unseasonably hot weather at Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town - one day's training was abandoned over fears for players' safety - Hong Kong's team needed to be at their fittest. "Six months before the World Championships, we began to undergo physical training to enhance individuals' endurance," added Lee.
"The hot and windy weather was different from Hong Kong and required a lot of physical fitness to cope with the entire competition."
"It takes about two to three hours for each game and the entire event lasts for seven days. The hot weather in daytime was very different from what we are used to and required major physical fitness."
Lee said Kwok's gold was reward for his hard work, "He has always achieved good results in the past, and ahead of this event, he was more diligent on enhancing his personal fitness and confidence. He also trained at the weekends to grasp the feeling of playing in daytime and on real grass."
As for the future, Lee is aiming to build on the success of the team in Cape Town and encourage more youngsters with visual impairments to take up the sport. "Blind bowls is quite popular in Hong Kong but we do not have enough athletes at the moment"
"We need more promotions in youth organisations and schools to identify suitable athletes, and it is also necessary for us to increase the number of staff and strengthen the development," she said.

Ng On-yee reclaims world title |
Ng On-yee was crowned women's snooker world champion for the second time after prevailing in an epic battle over Vidya Pillai of India in Singapore.
Ng won the title for the first time in 2015, but relinquished her crown to Reanne Evans the following year.
She had to battle hard to win it back, first beating 11-time winner Evans 5-4 in the semi-final, then triumphing 6-5 over Pillai.
And in an excellent month for Hong Kong snooker, Fu Ka-chun reached another major final, at the Players Championship held in United Kingdom, but missed out on the gold when England's Judd Trump defeated him 10-8.
