Terrific display from young sailors in Abu Dhabi
|
Hong Kong sailors starred at the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup Finals held on 5 - 9 April in Abu Dhabi, winning six medals and lifting the Nations Trophy for the second year in a row.
Nicolle Scholer, 14, won gold in the girls’ Optimist category, with twin sister Jasmine second.
The 12-year-old Duncan Gregor picked up bronze in the boys’ Optimist, and Preston Tso and Thomas Norton (both 16) were second and third respectively in the mens’ Laser 4.7 category.
“We are extremely pleased with the performance of the whole Hong Kong sailing team in Abu Dhabi,” said the HKSI’s Acting Head Sailing Coach Richard Knight.
“They had tricky wind conditions for the event and given the heat in Abu Dhabi, it certainly makes it much harder. It is only the second year the series has taken place and it is great that we are leading the rankings each time.”
Coach Knight explained how the Nations Trophy worked: “It is based on results from three earlier regattas as well, India in November, Hong Kong in February and Singapore in March, with Abu Dhabi being the final.
“Sailors count points from two of the three earlier rounds and then add these to the final. Hong Kong did well because there were sailors at all the events, but not only that, they also scored points.
“As Hong Kong is a host to one of the regattas in the series, it is important we support the series as it is a good way to encourage other top sailors in Asia to come to Hong Kong to compete.”
He said Hong Kong’s youth sailing was looking bright with “some great emerging talents” who can start to consider the Olympic classes.
“Many of these sailors have the Olympics down as their long-term goal,” he said. “Certainly some are considering the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. It is not easy to get the high-level competition on a regular basis that is needed to make a breakthrough at the world level, but there are many sailors with such good support from parents, coaches, clubs that they are already gaining this experience.
“Making the transition from junior to senior classes is not easy and there are many considerations to be made but there are some very talented and determined sailors so we will do what we can to support them.”

Historic results for HK girls' tennis team |
Hong Kong's junior girls' tennis team joined the 15 best in the world by winning the World Junior Tennis Asian Qualifying tournament in Thailand.
The team of Lin Wing-ka, Wong Hoi-ki and Wong Hong-yi beat the top three seeds - Australia, South Korea and Japan - on their way to one of the best results in Hong Kong junior tennis history.
The 14-year-olds will take on the world's top teams at the finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic in August. It was the first time a Hong Kong girls' team ever qualified for the finals.
“The most tiring match was in the semi-final against South Korea. I was off-form and dropped my first set. After that my coach helped adjust my mindset and then I played better,” said Hong-yi.
“The most memorable match was the quarter-final against Australia. If we lost, we would miss the World Final. The Australian pair was strong but Jenny and I showed good teamwork and played well to eventually win.”
Some of the sport's biggest names have starred at the World Finals, with Hong Kong hoping to reach at least the quarters.
“Our team target is to reach the quarter-final, but we will have to take one match at a time,” said Hoi-ki. “I hope we can be pressure-free and learn from every opponent.
“I think we may have some overseas clay competitions to familiarise ourselves with the surface. The footwork will be the most important part – we need to know how to glide in order to play.”
There was also an excellent result for Hong-yi's older brother Wong Hong-kit, as he won the boys' singles at the Junior 6 event in Chengdu. Jackie Anthony Tang reached the third place in the tournament, and the pair teamed up in the doubles to win a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, the women's senior team were in Fed Cup action and finished third at the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II tournament. |

Cheung beats some of the worldˇ¦s best to become Asian Fencing champ
|
Cheung Ka-long’s terrific year continued as he won the men’s foil title at the Little Swan Asian Fencing Championships held on 13 - 18 April in Wuxi, China.
The 18-year-old, who has only been training full-time for less than two years, beat the gold medallist from London 2012 Olympic Games, a world champion and a junior world champion on his way to overall victory.
“I don’t know how to describe my feelings after such an wonderful week,” he said. “I am over the moon and still wonder if it is true.
“It’s something I could never imagine before I left for China. But I know clearly this is just the beginning as there are many things I need to learn as a fencer in the senior category.
“I need to improve my speed, my skills and my power especially against Western fencers if I want to stay competitive in the sport at the highest level.”
Earlier in the week, Cheung had booked his place at the Rio Olympics with victory in the regional qualifying tournament. He was also crowned Asian champion this year.
“There has been a lot of pressure since January after knowing I have to compete in the Olympic qualifiers because there is only one spot available in my event,” he said.
“There is no room for any mistake even if I was quite confident. After taking the berth, it was like all the pressure was released and I was able to go through a carefree Asian Championships and the result was just amazing.”
Hong Kong also took four bronzes from the competition in the team events, including men’s foil and sabre and women’s foil and epee. |

Confidence boost for Ng ahead of Rio
|
Rising Hong Kong badminton player Ng Ka-long had a fine display at the OUE Singapore Open held on 12 - 17 April, reaching the semi-finals.
Ng stunned world No.1 Chen Long in the quarters, but South Korean Son Wan-ho prevented him from reaching the final.
Chen was Ng’s second major scalp this season after Ng beat two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan at the Hong Kong Open.
“The victory over a top player such as Chen, coupled with his win over Lin Dan, will give a young player like him a lot of confidence for the Olympic Games and beyond,” said HKSI’s Head Badminton Coach He Yiming.
At 11, Ng is HK’s highest-ranked player in the world heading into the Olympics in Rio.
“He still needs to overcome inconsistency but this is a common problem among young players,” added He.
“But young players also have an advantage in that they fear nobody and always attack with great speed regardless of who their opponents are. This is probably how Ng has beaten both Lin Dan and Chen Long.” |

Fu reaches semis at World Snooker Championships
|
Hong Kong snooker star Fu Ka-chun had his best result for 10 years at the Betfred World Snooker Championships held on 16 April - 2 May in Sheffield, England, agonisingly missing out on a place in the final.
Fu failed to capitalise on some early struggles from semi-final opponent Mark Selby, who went on to win the tournament after beating Fu 17-15.
Fu was disappointed not to make the final an all-Chinese affair after mainland player Ding Junhui became the first Asian ever to reach it. |
