Tennis teen Jackie Tang in confidence-boosting silver medal display
|
Highly rated teenager Anthony Jackie Tang had one of the most promising results of his junior tennis career as he finished runner-up at the China Junior 14 in Nanjing.
Tang, 17, beat the top seed, Chinese No.1 Wu Yibing, on his way to the final in the Grade 1 event, the highest tournament rating behind the grand slam. Seeded seven, Tang also beat the third seed in the semis.
And though he was beaten in the final by Chinese Taipei’s sixth seed Hsu Yuhsiou 4-6, 2-6, it was another valuable learning experience and confidence boost as he heads to the US collegiate circuit.
It was the first time a Hong Kong player had reached a Grade 1 final since Martin Sayer in 2005.
“Jackie has been doing well all year but it culminated with that performance in Nanjing,” said Amine Boustani, Head Tennis Coach at the HKSI. “That was a good win for Jackie because Wu has been top 16 in the world in juniors and it definitely gave him some added confidence going into the grand slam. One of his goals this year was to play in every grand slam which he ended up achieving.”
“It has also given other players from Hong Kong the confidence and belief that they can follow in his footsteps; something they perhaps lacked in the past was the belief that they are among the best in the world juniors.”
The final was almost an all-Hong Kong affair as another top local prospect, Wong Hong-kit, 18, was beaten by Hsu in the semis.
The pair also teamed up in the doubles and reached the semi-finals. “It is always good [to have a couple of talents playing well together],” added Coach Boustani. “If you look at all countries that have had some success there is always more than one player pushing each other. When one does better it just motivates the other to do even better.”
Tang has recently been recruited by Ivy League Columbia University and the next step for him will be to impress at the college level, while Wong is training full-time at the HKSI and making his way on the pro circuit.
Meanwhile, in the Kowloon Dairy Hong Kong Asian Tennis Junior Series 14 & Under, there were seven medals for local youngsters.
Kwok Hong-kiu and Leung Chui-kei won the girls doubles in week 2, having finished third in week 1. Kwok also won a bronze medal in week 1 in the girls singles and Leung won another bronze in week 2.
There were silvers in the boys singles as well for Wong Hoi-man and Leung Ka-yiu in weeks 1 and 2 respectively. In the doubles event, Chan Man-san and Lee Mang-him added a bronze medal to the team.

Billiard sports athlete Ng On-yee won another major title with victory at the WLBS Paul Hunter Ladies Classic in Furth, Germany.
Ng beat her top rival, Reanne Evans, 4-1 in the final, "My coach, Lee Walker, played in the same venue before and gave me good advice about the table as it is slightly faster and the pockets are a little bit narrow," she said."In the semi-final I also had a break of 104 and that gave me a lot of confidence, and that century break ensured her to win the prize for the tournament's highest break.
There were also three other major medals for the Hong Kong billiard sports team in August. Tam Yun-fung and Cheung Ka-wai were second (U18) and third (U21) respectively at the IBSF World Under-18 and Under-21 Snooker Championships, while Wong Yan was third in the boys' 9-ball singles at the Asian Men & Junior Pool Championships.

Hong Kong’s promising table tennis prospects had a highly impressive trip to Chinese Taipei for the Chinese Taipei Junior & Cadet Open - ITTF World Junior Circuit, Golden Series held on 24 - 28 August, returning with 11 medals including 5 gold.
It was the girls who delivered the victories, with Soo Wai-yam contributing to three of the five golds. She won the junior singles, and teamed up with Mak Tze-wing to lift the doubles as well, the pair also ensuring the team gold with Liu Qi.
Wong Chin-yau won the cadet singles, and paired with Lee Ka-yee – whom she beat in the singles final - to lift the cadet doubles too. |

Chu Wing-kum reached the final of the IBSA Tenpin Bowling Singles World Championships held on 20 - 28 August in Warsaw, Poland.
The tournament is the first-ever singles world championships for visually impaired bowlers and saw 40 bowlers from nine countries take part.

LCSD invites sports icons to promote local sports |
To tie in with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) had set up Olympic Focal Sites at five sports centres to broadcast memorable highlights of the competitions and to provide an array of fun-filled sports-themed activities. Olympic silver medallist, Table Tennis Coach Ko Lai-chak was invited to demonstrate and have fun games with the public on 8 August, to share the excitement of the Games together.
On 7 August, squash player Au Wing-chi participated in an event for the Sports For All Day 2016, touring around the Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and sharing with the public about her athletic life.

Cyclist Cheung King-lok supports the Hong Kong Cyclothon by participating in the promotion video shooting session on 11 August. Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the scale of the event was bigger comparing with last year, with extended routes and more international participants. A carnival had also be staged at Tsim Sha Tsui on 25 September.
