Record-breaking medal display from Hong Kong elite athletes at the 13th National Games
|
Hong Kong elite athletes celebrated its best-ever National Games display as the team returned from the 13th edition of the Games held in Tianjin with 16 medals.
The cycling team led the way at the mainland's four-yearly multisport extravaganza, winning seven medals and which was a record number of medals from a single sport for Hong Kong at the Games.
Leung Chun-wing won a gold in the Men's Omnium and the pair Pang Yao & Yang Qianyu got another gold in the Women's Madison; silvers went to Cheung King-lok in the Men's Time Trial, Meng Zhaojuan in the Women's Road Race and the team of Leung & Ko Siu-wai in the Men's Madison. Lee Wai-sze won both bronzes in the Women's Keirin and Sprint.
Despite his individual gold, Leung declared himself more satisfied with the teamwork that won silver in the Men's Madison.
"Perhaps I should be happier with the gold, but I think this silver medal is more meaningful," he said.
"Ko has served as deputy, waiting for a decade to prove himself for his own chance.
"Finally we have come together to win a medal for the Hong Kong team and it shows as long as you are willing to work hard then the opportunity for success will come.
"This insight is more important than my gold medal."
Pang and Yang, after achieving the brilliant result in the National Games, now aim to make their sporting dream come true by representing Hong Kong at the Tokyo Olympics.
"We have prepared for the Madison for long time, targeting a medal, so it is really great to have won gold," said Yang.
"We came all the way to Hong Kong to pursue our sporting dream and we are happy part of it has now been fulfilled."
Pang said, "We will not stop and will hopefully raise our game to an even higher level."
In Tianjin, fencing and karatedo team won three medals each; equestrian added two more; and there was a unique inter-provincial silver for swimmer To King-him. To team up with China superstar Sun Yang and his Zhejiang teammates for silver in the Men's 4x100 Metres Freestyle Relay as the Games permitted mixed-province teams for the first time.
In fencing, there was silver for Nicholas Edward Choi in the Men's Foil, bronze for Fong Hoi-sun in the Men's Epee, and a Men's Foil Team bronze for Chan Kyle, Cheung Ka-long, Cheung Siu-lun, and Choi.
Choi said, "I feel much happier winning a bronze medal in the team foil because our team work finally paid off. Four of us have been training together for a few years and we are like brothers. Being able to win together is double happiness."
The karate team added one silver by Cheng Tsz-man in the Male Individual Kata and two bronzes by Hung Ho-wai and Lau Mo-sheung Grace in the Male Individual Kata and Female Individual Kata respectively.
Clarissa Lyra won silver in the Show Jumping event of equestrian and Siu Wing-ying Jacqueline claimed bronze in the Individual Dressage.

Landmark Universiade performance by Hong Kong elite athletes |
Swimmer Siobhan Berndatte Haughey claimed two golds at the World University Games held in Taipei. Meanwhile, tennis players Wong Chun-hun & Yeung Pak-long Brian won a bronze in Men's Doubles and wushu athlete Mok Uen-ying got another bronze in Women's Taolu Taijiquan & Taijijian.
Haughey matched Hong Kong's best-ever individual result at the World University Games as she won two gold medals in the 100 and 200 Meters Freestyle events.
"There is still a gap between me and the true world-class swimmers," said the University of Michigan student, 19, who was an impressive fifth in the 200m at the World Championships this summer.
"The Tokyo Games is my long-term goal at this stage and I have already set a target, especially in the 200 Metres Freestyle."
Hong Kong tennis team had never won a medal at the Games before, and Wong and Yeung - now full-time athletes at the HKSI after returning from university studies in the US - are targeting more success.
"I think we both wish it was a different coloured medal," said Wong. "We performed so well in the semis. It came down to just one or two points that could have made it a different result."
Hong Kong had an impressive win over South Korea to reach the semis, but were edged out by Russia, who then went on to win the gold.
"Once we got into the semi-finals, we did not want to stop. We had to go for the gold at that point," said Yeung.
Mok considered pulling out off the Games after suffering from fever, but gritted her teeth to take the medal in the Games.
"It was not easy. I got a fever two weeks before the Games which seriously affected my training. I thank the HKSI psychologist for his professional advice during such a difficult time. During the competition I once lost my strength but my determination held me on. This was the first time wushu being chosen as one of the WUG sports and was my last WUG as well, so the medal meant a lot to me." she said.

First Hong Kong badminton doubles medal at TOTAL BWF World Championships |
Shuttlers Lee Chun-hei and Chau Hoi-wah went on an impressive giantkilling run at the TOTAL BWF World Championships in Glasgow, reaching the semi-finals to win a bronze medal.
Lee and Chau, seeded 10th, stunned Chinese second seeds Lu Kai and Huang Yaoqing in the quarter-finals 21-13, 17-21, 21-15.
They put up another strong fight against the No.3 seeds, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir in the semis, but were beaten by the Indonesian pair who went on to win the championships.
"Lee and Chau had never beaten the Chinese number two seeds in five previous meetings before, but they worked really hard, studying all their videos and trying to find their weaknesses," said Head Badminton Coach He Yeming. "Their hard work has paid off."
