Hong Kong bowlers achieve the best result at World Bowling Championships
|
Hong Kong's Tenpin Bowling team hit the jackpot in Las Vegas as they won medals in all three colours at the World Bowling Championships.
Mak Cheuk-yin, Tseng Tak-hin and Wu Siu-hong joined forces to claim gold in the Men's Trios, while Tseng and Lau Kwun-ho won a silver in the Men's Doubles. Completing a sensational Hong Kong performance was bronze for Chan Shuk-han in the Women's Singles.
The gold was Hong Kong's first ever at the world's biggest bowling event as Tseng, Mak and Wu beat Finland on the last bowl of the match in the semi-finals at 616-613 before seeing off Chinese Taipei in the final at 659-610.
Tseng said the double medal display was a great birthday present beyond his wildest dreams.
"Silver was already difficult, I have never expected a gold at this high-level event. It is the best gift in 30 years. I am so happy and feel like dreaming," said Tseng as the team returned to Hong Kong.
"Winning any medal at the World Championships is a great achievement. The performance fills them with confidence for next year's Asian Games," added Tseng.
Doubles partner Lau added: "It is always difficult to get the chance to medal and I do not think I have ever played so well. We were really lucky to get a gold and silver and the result proves our hard work pays off."
'Big Brother' of the team, Wu, added: "Our team winning medals at international competitions in these two years, proves our capability in competing with world's top bowlers."
"Hope we can keep gaining good result in the 2018 World Men's Championship, which will be held in Hong Kong, and letting more Hong Kong people know about tenpin bowling."

History-making squash team at World Men's Team Championship |
Hong Kong men's squash team made history when they won a first-ever bronze medal at the World Men's Team Championship.
The quartet of Au Chun-ming, Lee Ho-yin, Tang Ming-hong and Yip Tsz-fung, silenced the home crowd in Marseille in the quarter-finals as they stunned host nation and the third seed France 2-1.
Top seed Egypt awaited in the semis, and the eventual champions had too much class in a 2-0 win. But it was far from straightforward, with Lee pushing the world champion Karim Abdel Gawad all the way to a deciding fifth game in his match and Yip battling to four games against his opponent as Hong Kong showed they could compete with the world's best.
"I was very pleased with my team," said Head Coach Chris Robertson. "They played with plenty of attack and no fear. They put in a good performance - particularly Lee. "
"They looked comfortable against Egypt - they were so dynamic, aggressive and confident. I thought we were on a par with them for a lot of the time."
