Engaging the Community
During 2020/21, the HKSI collaborated with stakeholders and community partners to promote elite sports development in Hong Kong. Despite the impact of the pandemic, the HKSI continued to maximise the visibility of elite sports and connect athletes with the community, implementing 57 community engagement programmes, primarily held online, and reaching over 64,000 participants.

HKSI – Hang Seng Bank “Community in Action” Programme
Launched in May 2019, the three-year HKSI – Hang Seng Bank “Community in Action” programme entered its second year and continued to promote sports in the community and encourage the whole-person development of athletes.
With school classes disrupted during the pandemic, eight elite athletes from athletics, fencing, karatedo, table tennis, tennis and wushu were invited to participate in six online school sharing events, including a Facebook live streaming for students taking the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination and a virtual sports day, engaging over 14,400 participants. The programme was also promoted to the public through its dedicated Facebook page and Instagram account, which in total attracted over 8,700 likes and followers as of 31 March 2021.
Promotional Activities
On 26 February 2021, the HKSI Chairman hosted a Virtual Spring Reception to celebrate the Chinese New Year with stakeholders and the public. Hong Kong athletes joined in to share their seasonal greetings and positively engage the community. The event was broadcast on the HKSI’s social media platforms, attracting over 6,500 online viewers.
The HKSI official Facebook page, Instagram account and YouTube channel continued to be well received by sports fans and the public, accumulating over 20,800 likes and followers as of 31 March 2021. A WeChat official account was launched in June 2020 to reach out to more social media users. To promote elite athletes and boost public morale during the pandemic, a campaign named “Stay Strong Together”, covering a wide range of topics like physical and psychological health tips, home workouts, cooking demonstrations and giveaway games, was launched on the HKSI’s social media platforms. A WhatsApp sticker promotion was also introduced under the campaign, with 10 elite athletes being invited for the design of the stickers.
To further showcase the professional image of the HKSI and to enhance visitors’ visual experience during their visit, a number of new decoration projects were undertaken, including an interactive kiosk with sports games and photo opportunities, and giant letter blocks with the HKSI’s corporate identity.
During the year, a total of 28 athletes were invited as guests at knowledge exchange sessions, seminars and promotional activities for 19 organisations.
Media
In order to update the media the HKSI’s COVID-19 measures and arrangements, the HKSI Chairman met with the media on 12 September 2020 and 14 March 2021. He shared information on the work undertaken by the HKSI during the pandemic, and the vaccination arrangements for HKSI athletes and staff respectively.
In 2020/21, the HKSI issued 16 media invitations and releases, arranged 70 interviews, and logged 2,071 newspaper articles related to the HKSI activities.
Sponsorship
A total of HK$9.55 million in sponsorships and donations were secured during the fiscal year, benefiting various HKSI programmes. The HKSI gratefully acknowledges the organisations listed below, all of whom generously assisted with the development of Hong Kong elite sport in 2020/21.
