Jockey Club Sports PLUS Elite Athletes Community Programme

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the HKSI launched the Jockey Club Sports PLUS Elite Athletes Community Programme in June 2023.  The Programme is a three-year initiative aimed at promoting the values of sports to the broader community, enhancing public awareness and soliciting support for Hong Kong’s elite athletes as they compete in significant events over the next three years.

The comprehensive initiative of the Programme targets all sectors of the community, offering a diverse range of activities including school visits, joint school seminars, exhibitions, and other community engagement initiatives throughout the city.

The Programme took part in the Sports & Leisure Expo held from 19 to 25 July 2023. During the event, the Programme showcased an exhibition booth featuring interactive fitness activities, Talent Identification and Development tests as well as the medals and gear of Olympians. It was estimated that the Expo attracted over 400,000 visitors.

During the year, a total of seven elite athletes were invited to conduct seven school visits, engaging nearly 2,200 students.

In celebration of Hong Kong athletes’ remarkable success at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, a two-day event titled Meet the Asian Games Medallists was held on 24 and 25 November 2023 to provide an opportunity for the public to interact with the medallists. Aligned with 2023’s theme, Discover More, athletes and HKSI sport science experts shared their insights with over 500 participants, enhancing their understanding of local elite sports development.

Returning for the first time since the pandemic, the HKSI Open Day 2024 took place on 16 and 17 March 2024 as part of the Programme, drawing thousands of visitors. A variety of activities were on offer, including guided tours, sports try-outs, and athlete demonstrations. A new addition, the HKSI and Sports Science & Technology Zone, provided interactive games about sports nutrition and biomechanics.

Other Collaborations

As a partner organisation, the HKSI provided the venue for the Hong Kong Paralympic Day cum 100 Days Countdown of Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games held on 23 July 2023, attracting 2,500 visitors.

During the year, the HKSI took a significant step in reaching the public and the young generation by opening a channel on the Education Bureau’s Educational MultiMedia platform. By contributing corporate video series to the platform, the HKSI aims to enrich students’ learning experience, support the design of learning and teaching activities, and inspire the public through sports achievements.

Promotional Activities

The HKSI official Facebook page, Instagram and WeChat accounts and YouTube channel continued to be well received by sports fans and the public, accumulating over 56,400 likes and followers as of 31 March 2024.

A series of four promotional videos, HKSI Elite Tour, has been produced to showcase the extensive support the HKSI provides in nurturing athletes, encompassing advanced training science and technology, robust medical and nutritional guidance, psychological support, and dedicated venue provision. In addition, there is a strong commitment towards fostering personal growth and facilitating dual career development for athletes.

Decorations were produced, such as banners and lenticular displays showcasing images of over 20 athletes. They serve to embody the mottos and spirits of elite athletes, providing a source of inspiration for visitors. To further foster a sense of belonging and underscore the dedication of athletes representing Hong Kong, China in the world of sports, national and regional flags have been installed across 16 training venues.

During the year, a total of 40 athletes were invited as guests at sharing sessions, seminars and promotional activities for 51 organisations.

Media

To pledge public support to elite athletes and coaches participating in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games and Asian Para Games, the HKSI and NSAs jointly organised 15 Meet the Media sessions at different elite training venues for over 280 athletes and coaches to interact with the media. Another Meet the Media session was organised in January 2024 for Mr Tony Choi, the new HKSI Chief Executive to share his vision with the media.

In 2023/24, the HKSI issued 36 media invitations and releases, arranged 87 interviews, and generated over 31,000 items of coverage, including print, online and social media articles related to the HKSI and athletes.
