Terrific month on road and track for HK cycling team
|
Hong Kong's cycling team enjoyed a terrific month on both road and track, starring at the Asian Track Cycling Championships with five gold, two silver and two bronze medals and recording a historic victory at the Asian Road Cycling Championships as they added another gold, two silvers and one bronze.
First up was velodrome action at 37th Asian Track Cycling Championships cum 24th Asian Junior Track Cycling Championships in New Delhi and leading the way as ever was Lee Wai-sze, who achieved a three-gold haul that made her the most successful individual athlete at the event.
She was back to her best in the first major championships since the Rio Olympics, winning the Keirin, Sprint and 500m Time Trial and finishing second with Ma Wing-yu in the Team Sprint.
Lee had won the time trial five years in a row from 2011 to 2015 at the Asian Championships, but lost the title last year. This year she set a record time of 34.204 seconds to regain the title, comfortably beating South Korea's Cho Sun-young (35.224 seconds) and China's Li Xuemei (35.271 seconds).
Despite the win, Lee said she was still striving for improvement. "There is always room for improvement and as is clear, this was not my best performance to date," she said. "I am happy that I won the gold, but medals do not matter as much as my own performance does."
Lee lifted her second gold of the championships by beating South Korea's Kim Won-gyeong and Lee Hye-jin in the Sprint, and was then faster than Lee Hye-jin and Japan's Kayono Maeda in the Keirin.
Lee and Ma were teaming up for the first time in the Sprint and only missed out on gold by almost 2 seconds. It could bode well for the future with Lee admitting she hopes for some support in the event at Tokyo 2020.
With Lee by now expected to dominate against her regional rivals, perhaps even more encouraging for the team were golds in the Madison for Meng Zhaojuan and Pang Yao*, and for talented youngster Leung Chun-wing in the men's Scratch Race.
Meng and Pang finished almost three laps ahead of the field in their event after a superb performance and Leung was similarly impressive, finishing almost two laps ahead of the rest.
Leung also added a silver and Meng a bronze, both in the Omniums. Another bronze for Hong Kong was won by Leung Chun-long in the men's Junior Keirin.
At the end of February it was the turn of the road racers to shine in Bahrain, with Head Cycling Coach Shen Jinkang hailing a historic win for Yang Qianyu* in the women's race.
The victory of the 24-year-old Yang was the first ever for a Hong Kong woman in the event. With Meng and Diao Xiaojuan acting as 'domestiques', after 89.6km, she took the sprint finish ahead of South Korea's Na Ah-reum and Japan's Miho Yoshikawa in two hours 32 minutes and 50 seconds.
Pang won two silvers at women's U23 events, in the Time Trial and Road Race, and Cheung King-lok added a bronze in the Men's Time Trial.

In the month's other World Tour event, Doo and Lam won the U21 singles titles at the Qatar Open, with Doo beating teammate Soo Wai-yam in her final.

Another medal placing for in-form Fu Ka-chun |
Fu Ka-chun continued his impressive season by reaching the semi-finals at the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix held during 6 - 12 February in Preston, United Kingdom.
Fu has been arguably the most in-form player on the pro snooker circuit this season, winning the Scottish Open in December and consistently reaching the final four of top tournaments.
Unfortunately, he missed out on another potential tournament triumph with a surprise 4-6 defeat in the semi to Ryan Day from Wales.

Seven golds for junior fencers at Asian Championships |
Hong Kong's young fencers showed that the future is bright with seven gold medals at the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships held during 24 February - 5 March in Korat, Thailand.
Fencing has been on the rise in Hong Kong, with impressive performances at the most recent Olympics and at regional level, and the next generation showed they are hot on the senior team's heels with three silvers and 11 bronzes taking their medal total from the event to a whopping 21.
Chan Yin-fei (women's sabre cadet), Choi Chun-yin (men's foil junior), Hsieh Sin-yan (women's epee cadet) and Lee Chak-fung (men's sabre cadet) took individual golds, with Choi, Hsieh and Lee's wins helping secure titles in their respective team events as well.
