Impressive display from Hong Kong karatekas in Spain
|
Hong Kong's karatedo team enjoyed their trip to the ancient city of Toledo, Spain for the first round of the Karate1 Series A competition, returning with a silver and bronze medal.
Hong Kong karatekas Cheng Tsz-man and Lau Mo-cheung came second and third in the male and female individual kata respectively as both titles went to home fighters.
Though Cheng had beaten home fighter 5-0 in his semi-final, world No.1 Damian Quintero of Spain, was too strong for Cheng in their final, winning 4-1 on 'Karate Day', a global celebration of the sport.
Lau narrowly lost 2-3 in her semi-final to world No.1 Sandra Sanchez. It was the second medal of 2017 for Lau, who won bronze at the top-tier Premier League event in Rotterdam in March, and the 10th podium place of her career on the World Karate Federation circuit.
"Lau had an outstanding array of great performances, winning many of her matches a maximum 5-0, and only losing out to the world number one," said William Thomas, the HKSI Head Karatedo Coach.
"Another impressive performance was from Cheng who for the first time made a WKF Karate 1 (World Grand Prix) final only to lose to the world number one. Both performed to their full potential.
"Other notable performances included Tung Yee-yin, who also made the female kata semi-final but narrowly lost out for the bronze medal.
"And kumite produced some promising results with Choi Wan-yu (-61kg) winning her first two bouts attaining 9th place over all in a very competitive category.
"For the male -60kg category Lee Chun-ho battled his way to 7th place through an international field of over 40 competitors."

Hong Kong hosted the Blue Cross Insurance Asian Fencing Championships for the first time and local athletes shook the ground with a historic medal count of eight comprising 2 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Olympians Cheung Ka-Long and Kong Man-wai reached the finals in men's foil and women's epee respectively.
Kong was one point from victory but lost 12-13 as her opponent fought back, while reigning Asian Champ Cheung was dethroned 11-15.
All three disciplines, both men and women, added 6 bronzes in the team events.

Eight impressive medals for table tennis squad |
Hong Kong's table tennis squad had a productive month, won 8 bronze medals at senior and junior level.
Wong Chun-ting's semi-final appearance at the World Tour China Open in Chengdu was among the highlights, while Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching teamed up for women's doubles bronze at the same event. Doo also gained a bronze in the U21 women's singles.
Mak Tze-wing and Soo Wai-yam won 2 bronzes of the women's singles (U21) at the Japan Open.
And in Korea, at the Asian Junior & Cadet Championships, there were bronzes for the junior and cadet girls' teams, and for Tsang Tsz-tsun and Wong Chin-yau in the junior mixed doubles.

Yu Chui-yee climbs the rankings after another double-gold display |
Wheelchair fencer Yu Chui-yee enjoyed a terrific performance at the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup held in Warsaw, Poland from 28 June to 3 July, winning two gold medals home.
But none could get past Yu in her categories as she won gold in both women's Cat A epee and foil.
It continued a run of fine form for Yu Chui-yee, who took a gold and silver respectively in those disciplines in May, and she is now up to seventh (epee) and second (foil) in the world rankings.

Billiard sports in search of the next super stars |
The Hong Kong Billiard Sports Control Council and the Hong Kong Sports Institute jointly hosted a Talent Identification and Development programme for the first time on 24 June to identify talented youngsters who demonstrate potential in cue sports so as to have a sustainable development for Billiard Sports.
This is the first-ever Billiard Sports talent screening test highlighting both the innate physical attributes and acquired techniques of potential talents. Hong Kong leading player Fu Ka-chun and World Champion Ng On-yee also attended the activity to observe the performance of the young players and share with them the attitude and skills for elite training and competitions.

A number of athletes were invited to participate in the video shooting of HKSAR 20th Anniversary Programme named "Hong Kong Heroes", which was produced by and broadcasted on TVB. Hong Kong athletes' sporting spirit is always demonstrated at competitions. The programme showcases versatile faces of the athletes and let the public have a glimpse of athletes' lifestyle. Hope the public have a deeper understanding about the athlete's devotion to sport and render continuous supports to them.

Elite athletes meet the public on 1 July Raceday |

Elite athletes such as Au Hoi-shun, Ng On-yee and Wong Chun-ting met the public on a special day - 1 July for Hong Kong Jockey Club Reunification Cup Raceday. More than 28,000 visitors attended the events at Sha Tin and Happy Valley Racecourses to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. The athletes presented some awards and interacted with the public.

Gymnasts Shek Wai-hung, Wong Hiu-ying and cyclist Leung Chun-wing joined the "Get Energised@20A Kwai Tsing Celebration Party" for celebrating HKSAR's 20th Anniversary. The event was held on 1 July in Tsing Yi Sports Centre. The three athletes shared their inspiring stories with the youths on site.

Professor Lin Mei-Chun, Chairman of the Department of Physical Education of the National Taiwan Normal University, Mr Huang Yu and Mr Zhou Mingzhen, Director and Deputy Director of the Department of Sports, Kaohsiung City visited the HKSI on 4 June. The group was introduced to a range of sports science and medicine services, as well as training facilities provided at the Institute, and had a good exchange of views and experiences on elite sports development.
