Fu Ka-chun returns to winning ways with stunning comeback
|
Hong Kong snooker star Marco Fu Ka-chun hailed "the best win of his career" after he made a sensational comeback to beat the four-time world champion, John Higgins, at the Coral Scottish Open held during 12 - 18 December 2016 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
Fu was 1-4 down in the final against the local favourite, but reeled off eight frames in a row to win his first ranking event since 2013.
"Based on the way John started the match, I thought it was going to be 1-9 or 2-9," admitted Fu. "In a short spell I think I dragged John down to my standard a little bit, and those three frames from 1-4 to get to 4-4 were very crucial.
"I just can't believe I am the champion. In the first part of the season I was really struggling but I somehow found some form at the UK Championship. It is probably the best win of my career."
Fu jumped from world No.14 to No.8 with the win and said some work with the HKSI's Head Billiard Sports Coach, Wayne Griffiths, had helped get his game back on track after an unsatisfactory start to the season.
"Before the UK Championship, I worked on a few technical things with Wayne," he said. "My alignment was way off for potting balls so I had to correct that, as well as my cue action. I spent a lot of time practising. But even going to the UK Championship, I was not that confident. I managed to find some form during the UK trip and was able to bring that into this tournament.
"It is nice to win today and remind myself that I can do it under pressure. I am really confident now going into the second half of the season."
Griffiths praised Fu's performance was one of the best he had ever seen, "Marco was obviously over the moon, and rightly so. In my opinion, this was one of the most dominant performances ever to win a professional tournament.
"His scoring was at a level that drew plaudits from legends and current players alike. It showed the world that Marco is still one of the best snooker players on the planet as he approaches 40.
"The win is another testament to Marco's work ethic and desire to improve. He never fails to impress with his attitude.
As he returned with a hero's welcome in Hong Kong, Fu said he hoped a major billiard tournament could return to the city.
"I am still hungry for success and hopefully my best is yet to come," said Fu. "Age is never a problem in snooker as long as you have the right mentality and the passion.
"There are still many things I have yet to achieve in snooker such as bringing a ranking tournament to Hong Kong to inspire more young people to take up this sport."

Doo and Lee win silver at table tennis's grand finale |
Hong Kong women's doubles pair Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching won a silver medal at the Seamaster Qatar ITTF World Tour Grand Finals, table tennis' prestigious season-ending event.
The youngsters were the second Hong Kong pair ever to reach the final, but Japan's Hina Hayata and Yui Hamamoto edged them out in six games.
Doo was left cursing Hayata, who also beat her in the final of the U21 women's singles the previous day in Qatar.
Tie Yana and Wong Chun-ting had solid displays in the women's and men's singles respectively, both reaching the quarter finals.
Meanwhile, Mak Tze-wing was among the standouts for Hong Kong's youngsters at the World Junior Championships in Cape Town.
She reached the final of the girls' singles and helped seal third-place finishes in the girls team and doubles events. Ng Pak-kam reached the semis of the boys' singles.

Tenpin Bowling athlete, Mak Cheuk-yin, took home a bronze medal from his debut appearance at the World Singles Championship held from
2 to 9 December 2016 in Doha, Qatar.
The third seed narrowly missed out on a place in the final after losing 224-235 to second seed Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia in the semis.
Mak was the only Hong Kong bowler to make it through the qualification pool. He and Ismail were neck and neck for most of the match and Mak could have taken the victory in the 11th frame but for a stubborn pin 10.
Nevertheless, it was another highlight in an impressive 2016 for Mak who earlier in the year won three golds at the Asian Championships.

Flawless HK girls win Asia Rugby U18 Sevens Championship |
Hong Kong won the first ever Asia Rugby Girls Under 18 Sevens Championship which was held from 30 November to 2 December 2016 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with a flawless performance beating Kazakhstan 12-5 in the final. The team won all six of their games in the six-team, three-day competition.
The inaugural event was played at Dubai's National Stadium in front of a bumper crowd as part of the World Sevens Series, but if Hong Kong were nervous they did not show it.
Tries from Jessica Eden and Hebe Talles and some hard team defending proved the key against an always dangerous Kazakhstan.
Six of the 12-woman squad are 16 years old, with only two 18, so the future looks bright for Hong Kong women's rugby, with the players being urged to continue their progression through the age levels to the national senior team.

The HKSI organised a Japan Exchange Tour from 15 - 19 December 2016 which offered a chance to local athletes to learn from Japan's sports training system through seminars and conferences held at the Japan Institute of Sports Sciences. 28 athletes joined the tour and they also visited the venues of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Cheung Ngan-yi promotes green living |
The "Shanghai Commercial Pok Oi Cycle for Millions 2017" invited shuttler Cheung Ngan-yi to attend the opening ceremony on 6 December 2016, where she joined for a fun competition with Event Ambassador Richie Ren, Benevolent Star Anjaylia Chan and representatives of Eastern Long Lions.
The event aims to encourage people to live green by promoting the use of bicycle as a form of green transport and to raise funds for establishing the largest Care and Attention Home for the Elderly in Hong Kong.
