Athletics team (Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped) wins 5 medals at the 6th INAS European Indoor Athletics Championships

The latest issue of the HKSI publication Sports Excellence was published on 28 March as a supplement to Ming Pao, bringing news of local elite sports and the work of the HKSI to the public. To view the online edition (in Chinese only), please click here.


Representatives from HKJC and HKUST visit HKSI

A delegation of The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), led by its Chairman Mr T. Brian Stevenson SBS JP, visited the HKSI on 11 March. Apart from attending the HKSI New Year Luncheon, Mr Stevenson also toured the HKSI’s facilities in the company of HKSI Chairman Mr Carlson Tong Ka-shing JP to gain an understanding of the training of Hong Kong’s elite athletes. On 13 March, the HKSI also received a visit by Dr Roger Levermore, Visting Associate Professor of the Department of Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

Efforts of cycling team highly recognised by community and commercial sector

The endeavour and perseverance of the Hong Kong cycling team has been widely appraised and recognised by the community as a whole. Head Coach Shen Jinkang and cyclist Lee Wai-sze were awarded at the ¡§Leader of the Year 2012¡¨ organised by Sing Tao News Corporation Limited on 22 March. In addition, Lee was invited to promote cycling safety and ¡§Brand Hong Kong¡¨ campaigns by participating in television commercial shootings. For charity, she became the second local athlete after Wong Kam-po to be an ambassador of UNICEF Hong Kong to promote children protection. Furthermore, she was invited to share her story with the young generation at Hong Kong Baptist University on 26 March.

Meanwhile, new athlete-turned-coach Wong Kam-po continues to be sought after by the commercial sector. Recently he partnered with Lee Wai-sze as endorsers for fashion brand UNIQLO, taking part in the shooting for its newly developed print advertisements. With his healthy image, he also helped promote the new adult dairy product of Nestle Carnation.

Kwok Ho-ting and Wong Hiu-ying promote ¡§2013 Hong Kong Derby¡¨

Cyclist Kwok Ho-ting and gymnast Wong Hiu-ying joined jockeys Douglas Whyte and Matthew Chadwick respectively to promote the ¡§2013 Hong Kong Derby¡¨ organised by The Hong Kong Jockey Club in mid March. During the exchange sessions, they encouraged each other and shared experience on pressure relief.

Au Wing-chi and Cheung Siu-lun participate in ¡§Hong Kong Student Sports Awards¡¨

Squash player Au Wing-chi and fencer Cheung Siu-lun were invited to share at the ¡§A.S. Watson Group Hong Kong Student Sports Awards¡¨ presentation on 10 March, where they shared their life experience with hundreds of students and encouraged them to try more disciplines and develop sporting talent.

Yu Chui-yee shares at Sun Life Financial and Belle International staff seminars

The inspiring story of wheelchair fencer Yu Chui-yee is a good example to motivate staff morale. She was invited by Sun Life Financial Hong Kong and Belle International to attend their staff seminars on 20 March and 3 April respectively, where the participants received positive energy through her sharings to face new challenges ahead.

The author, a non-professional athlete, ran his first marathon in 1998 when he was forty-three. Since then, he completed numerous marathons in various cities located around the world and also had successfully finished eleven Ironman in six continents. The author shared that his effort increased his self-esteem and provided the resilience to cope with the inevitable pressure that life throws at us. Teaching disability sport : a guide for physical educators (Second edition)

This guide is written for sport coaches and physical educators who train athletes with disabilities. The guide is organised into two parts. Part one first addresses training programme planning and implementation. Part two covers sport skills, and modifications required to address different needs and abilities of athletes. The guide also comes with a DVD which presents games used to teach the sport skills described in the book. This is an ideal reference for professionals working with athletes with disabilities, and for those preparing to become sport coaches and physical educators.
