HK windsurfers impress over Asian Games course
|
Hong Kong¡¦s windsurfing team laid down a marker for the Asian Games with 2 gold and 3 silver medals at the 16th Asian Sailing Championships held from 30 June to 6 July in Incheon, Korea.
Cheng Kwok-fai and Lo Sin-lam were first in the men¡¦s IMCO and women¡¦s RS:One events respectively, while there were runners-up places for Lee Chun-ting (men¡¦s IMCO), Leung Ho-tsun (men¡¦s RS:X) and Chan Tsz-kit (boys¡¦ Techno293).
The event was held over the Asian Games course, giving Hong Kong valuable experience of what they will face in Korea in September.
Rene Appel, Head Windsurfing Coach of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI), said the opportunity to gain experience of an unusual course had been invaluable.
¡§We had very light winds most of the time, and the current was very strong,¡¨ he said. ¡§There is a massive eight-to-nine-metre difference between low and high tide and this is truly exceptional and amongst some of the places with the highest tidal difference in the world.
¡§Having been there now also means we know what to expect in terms of logistics, food and culture. We had a good time there and everyone was very friendly and accommodating, so we are not expecting any problems in these areas, but it is good to know.¡¨
Lo went into the final races in the new RS:One class knowing she only had to finish directly behind her Thai rival, Siripon Kaewduangngam, in order to win the title; she managed to do so, despite Kaewduangngam¡¦s superior board speed.
¡§I am happy with winning the title, learned a lot in the time spent here in Korea and during the race, and have identified a few areas in which I can further improve in the final lead up to the Asian Games,¡¨ said Lo.
Cheng was disqualified in the sixth race for a premature start in the men¡¦s IMCO, but still won it by a wide margin from teammate Lee after winning six of the 10 races.
Leung, who competed at the London Olympics, got off to a poor start in the RS:X, with Korean rivals much more comfortable in the local conditions. He was a distant fourth after the opening races, but improved to win the last two races and take the silver.
Appel was pleased with the performance of his squad, but warned that the competition at the Asian Games will be tougher, with many of the bigger names in action elsewhere during the Incheon event.
¡§I am pleased with the results at this stage of our preparations,¡¨ Appel said. ¡§Performance on the water however still needs to be improved further but with 10 more weeks to go I am satisfied with where we stand at the moment.
¡§It is of course good to know where you stand with only a little time left before the actual games. However, at the same time not all of our strongest competitors were present this time, in particular in the Olympic classes.
¡§So, come the end of September [at the Asian Games], the level of competition is guaranteed to be a notch higher - as will be our level of performance. We are all looking forward to the competition.¡¨ |

Billiard sports: HK team kings of the world
|
Hong Kong landed a world title in billiard sports as the men¡¦s team of Fung Kwok-wai and Lee Chun-wai defeated Pakistan ¡V the defending champions ¡V at the IBSF World 6-Red & Team Snooker Championships held from 18 to 19 June in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Fung and Lee raced into a 2-0 lead in the final, but Pakistan fought back to make it 2-3 as they tried to hold on to their crown. The Hong Kong pair held their nerve, though, and won the next two frames for a 5-3 victory.
In the women’s singles event, Ng On-yee couldn¡¦t defend the title she won last year, but she teamed up with Wan Ka-kai in the team event, and the pair took home a bronze medal.

Hong Kong¡¦s team of Chan Ho-ling, Chu Man-yee, Liu Tsz-ling and Tong Tsz-wing finished runners-up at the 17th Asian Squash Team Championships held from 11 to 15 June, after losing to Malaysia in the final.
Though they couldn¡¦t overcome the powerhouses and top seeds, with the almost unbeatable world number one Nicol David, they had much to be satisfied with after the tournament at the Squash Centre in Admiralty.
¡§Overall, it has been a great tournament for us as we reached the final with a squad weakened by the absence of our top player [Au Wing-chi] because of injury,¡¨ said HKSI Head Squash Coach Tony Choi. ¡§The result boosts not only our team spirit but also our confidence as we build towards the Asian Games.¡¨
There was also success for the next generation of talent at the 21st Asian Junior Individual Championships ¡V Hong Kong won 1 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze at the event in Iran.

Future Elite Road to HKSI
|
Organised by the Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association and co-organised by the HKSI, the ¡§Future Elite Road to HKSI¡¨ tour was successfully held on 5 July, attracting the participation of over 300 athlete-students from primary schools and their parents.
On the day, the student-athletes were led on a tour of the HKSI¡¦s redeveloped, world-class training facilities, and had the opportunities to get up close with Hong Kong¡¦s elite athletes. Through introductions by elite athletes and coaches and a sports science talk, the students gained a good understanding of how to become an elite athlete. A talk was also organised for the parents, where HKSI Chief Executive Dr Trisha Leahy BBS, coaches, elite athletes and their parents shared on the support needed for athletes¡¦ development.
The tour ended on a high note as current and retired elite athletes, joined by guests including HKSI Vice-Chairman Mr Tang Kwai-nang BBS JP and all the student-athletes, performed an ¡§Active Dance¡¨ led by the organiser.
The ¡§Future Elite Road to HKSI¡¨ is part of the ¡§Bless Hong Kong¡¨ campaign, with the aim to introduce student-athletes to elite athletes¡¦ training and facilities in Hong Kong, and to encourage them to actively participate in sports and pursue the path to becoming an elite athlete.
