Statement by Dr Eric Li, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI), in response to HKSAR Financial Secretary, Mr John Tsang's Budget Speech on 23 February 2011
According to the Financial Secretary's 2011-12 Budget Speech, the Government will set up a HK$7 billion “Elite Athletes Development Fund”, the investment return of which will replace the current mode of providing subvention to the Institute. Dr Eric Li, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) believes this long-term and stable funding support is a major milestone for elite sports development in Hong Kong. With HK$1.8 billion already invested by the Government in building world-class training facilities, the HKSI has been working on its long-term strategic plan to provide a state-of-the-art, elite sport training and athlete support system, which can produce sustainable world-class results. "The HKSI has been developing its long-term strategic plan to enhance the HKSI elite training system software. We are extremely encouraged by this clear, long-term Government commitment to elite sport development in Hong Kong," Dr Li said. “The funding will help make the Institute a world-class training centre, providing more support to elite athletes, and strengthen our efforts to identify and train young athletes with potential in collaboration with the National Sports Associations. The HKSI will continue to strategically and effectively utilise the funding to the direct benefit of elite sport development,” he added. The HKSI looks forward to continue strengthening its relationship with the Government, Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and National Sports Associations to ensure Hong Kong athletes achieve world standard results.
