Sports Marketing & Sponsorship
Sports sponsorship has been one of the effective communication tools of many corporations in Hong Kong. Being the training base for elite and potential athletes, the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) organises a number of talent identification, training and development programmes which welcome corporate sponsorships.
Currently, the HKSI organises programmes such as Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme, Hong Kong Coach Education Programme, Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards, International Sports Science Symposium, etc. Major sponsors of HKSI include The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hang Seng Bank.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Elite Athletes Fund (the Trust Fund) was established in 2004 to support elite athletes in Hong Kong. In 2013/14 the Trust Fund contributed HK$9.0 million to the HKSI for its Direct Financial Support to athletes, as well as a further HK$1.23 million as incentive payments for participation in Major Games.
Organised by the HKSI since 1994, the Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme provides cash awards to medal winners at seven Major Games. Hang Seng Bank (“HSB”) began to sponsor the Scheme in 1996 to provide additional cash incentives to local athletes who achieve outstanding performances at the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the National Games, and further included winning athletes at the East Asian Games commencing in 2005. HSB extended its cash incentives to medallists at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games to further support the development of local sports in 2010. To date, over HK$44 million has been awarded to 456 local athletes by the HKSI and HSB.
The Hong Kong Coach Education Programme (“HKCEP”) was established in 1991 with over 86,700 coaches benefited from its training and recognition programmes throughout the years. The major components of the HKCEP include Coach Accreditation Programme, Continuing Coach Education Programme, School Coach Education Programme and Coaching Awards.
