Hong Kong Wushu Athletes Prepare for the 8th Asian Wushu Championship
The Hong Kong Wushu Union (HKWU) and the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) co-organise the 8th Asian Wushu Championships Flag Presentation and HKSI Scientific Collaboration Announcement today (17 August) at the HKSI. Guest-of-Honour Mr Timothy Fok GBS JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) presented the HKSAR flag to Mr Wan Hing-yuen, Vice President of HKWU and Mr Luk Chung-mow, Sanshou Team Manager of the Hong Kong Wushu Team for the Championships. Mr Wan Hing-yuen expressed appreciation to the unfailing support of the Government, SF&OC and the HKSI and said, ‘Wushu has been developing rapidly in Hong Kong and other parts of the world and our elite athletes have achieved excellent result at the Asian and international sporting arena. Today is special for the sport due to the increased support of science and technology in our sports gear, thanks to the HKSI and Dr Kong Footcare Limited. ” Dr Trisha Leahy, HKSI Chief Executive also spoke at the ceremony saying, ‘Being the delivery agent of the Government in elite sports training system, the HKSI has put deliberate effort in recent years in enhancing elite athletes’ sporting performance through scientific collaborations with overseas, mainland China and local entities. Thanks to Dr Kong Footcare Limited for supporting the wushu athletes. We will continue explore other partners for different Elite Sports and also welcome local entities approach us.’ Coaches and athletes also shared their preparation and expectation to the Championships. ‘The Team has prepared hard for the Championships and made remarkable progress during their training in China over the past two months,’ said HKSI Head Wushu Coach Liu Tao. ‘We will perform our best and hope to win more medals for Hong Kong,’ shared by taolu athlete Tang Siu-kong. Mr Raymond Ng of Dr Kong Footcare Limited and Dr Raymond So, HKSI Sports Science and Medicine Coordinator explained at the ceremony how the customized shoes can help enhance quality of training and sporting performance in the future. The 8th Asian Wushu Championship will be held from 19 - 26 August 2012 in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Hong Kong will send 24 members, including 15 athletes and nine officials to participate in two events - taolu and sanshou.
