10th National Games Medallists Rewarded for Good Performances

24 October 2005

The great performances by Hong Kong's medallists at the recently concluded 10th National Games ("Games") held in Jiangsu between 12 and 23 October will be rewarded with cash incentives under the Hang Seng Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme.

Organised by the Hong Kong Sports Institute ("HKSI") and sponsored by Hang Seng Bank ("the Bank"), the Scheme will award cash incentives totalling HK$480,000 to the three Hong Kong athletes who won medals at the Games. The Bank's sponsorship of the Scheme involves matching all cash incentives offered by the HKSI to medallists at the Games on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Competing against the best athletes from all over mainland China, Hong Kong's athletes returned home with one gold, three bronze medals won in cycling and athletic events.

Supported by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Scheme aims to encourage and recognise achievements by Hong Kong athletes at major sporting games, including the 10th National Games, the 4th East Asian Games and the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dr Eric Li, Chairman of the HKSI, appraised the hard work of Hong Kong athletes at the Games: "We are very pleased with the performance of Hong Kong athletes who have demonstrated their best when facing highly competitive counterparts. They are now in peak condition for the upcoming East Asian Games to be held between 29 October and 6 November in Macau. We look forward to more breakthroughs and glory for Hong Kong."

Mr Raymond Or, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, congratulated Hong Kong athletes on their success: "On top of the medals won by our athletes at the Games, we are very proud of the impressive effort made by our athletes. We wish them much success at the upcoming East Asian Games."

The Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme was initiated by the HKSI in 1994. Hang Seng Bank has been sponsoring the Scheme for the Olympics, the Paralympics and the National Games since 1996. To date, over HK$6 million has been awarded to 41 medallists. This year will be the first time that the Scheme has included athletes competing at the East Asian Games.

To recognise their remarkable achievements, an awards presentation ceremony will be held in November, where the cash incentives will be presented to 10th National Games and 4th East Asian Games medal winners.
