17 September 2025

The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr John Lee Ka-chiu GBM SBS PDSM PMSM announced today in the 2025 Policy Address that support for elite athletes will be further strengthened. Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM, Chairman of the HKSI expressed his heartfelt gratitude for this initiative.

Mr Tang stated, “The HKSI is grateful for the unwavering support of the Government towards elite sports development and elite athletes. This includes the review and adjustment of the Direct Financial Support mechanism for elite athletes, completed in March this year, which allows athletes to focus on their training with greater financial stability.” In addition to this support, the Government places importance on enhancing athletes’ training efficacy by leveraging advancements in sports medicine research and development. Mr Tang noted that the HKSI will continue to strengthen the application of sports science and medicine to help athletes improve their competitiveness and achieve outstanding results.

The New Facilities Building of the HKSI, which opened last year, has enhanced support in areas such as scientific conditioning training, sports science and medicine. Furthermore, the HKSI remains active in collaborating with various institutions and organisations, including the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine and the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, to enhance the development of sports medicine and medical support for elite athletes.

The Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme, jointly funded by the Government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a total injection of HK$300 million, provides elite athletes with access to the latest scientific and technological support, aiding their preparation for and performance in major international competitions.

As the Government’s elite sport training systems delivery agent, the HKSI remains committed to an athlete-centred approach, providing state-of-the-art training environments and comprehensive support for all elite sports and athletes, helping them strive for excellence on the international stage.
