The HKSI successfully hosted the Hong Kong Sports Science and Technology Symposium from 10 to 11 July 2026, bringing together sports scientists, medical professionals, coaches, researchers, academics, and innovation and technology experts to exchange knowledge and explore emerging trends in sports science and technology. The event also showcased achievements under the Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme (SRFS), a HK$300 million initiative jointly supported by the HKSAR Government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM, Chairman of the HKSI described the Symposium as a significant milestone in the implementation of the SRFS. He noted that the Scheme has strengthened partnerships between the HKSI and local universities, enabling research findings to be translated into practical training methods and athlete support programmes. These efforts have contributed to Hong Kong athletes’ recent success at major international competitions, including the Olympic Games, Asian Games, National Games, as well as their Para sport counterparts.

Remarks were delivered by Mr Raistlin Lau Chun JP, Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Ms Winnie Yip, Head of Charities (Culture & Sports Cluster; Community Engagement) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Both highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among the sports, academic and research sectors to accelerate the application of research outcomes, enhance athlete training and support services, and promote the sustainable development of sports in Hong Kong.

The Opening Ceremony also featured sharing sessions by Hon Duncan Chiu, Member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council representing technology and innovation functional constituency; and the HKSI representatives Mr Chan King-yin MH, Head Windsurfing Coach; Mr Peter Genever, Head Squash Coach; and Ms Wing Leung, Senior Sports Physiotherapist. They discussed the future of sports science, technology, and innovation in Hong Kong, and demonstrated how SRFS-funded projects have enhanced multidisciplinary support and athlete preparation.

The Symposium featured a keynote presentation by Mr Low Jia Ren, Deputy Chief, High Performance Sport Institute, Sport Excellence Singapore, together with panel discussions, and sharing sessions that explored topics such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, wearable technologies, and other innovations in elite sport. In closing, Hon Vincent Cheng Wing-shun BBS MH JP, Vice-Chairman of the HKSI, thanked all speakers and partners and reaffirmed the HKSI’s commitment to advancing innovation, strengthening Hong Kong’s high performance sports ecosystem, and supporting athletes in achieving international success.
