Organised by the HKSI, title sponsored by Shine Tak Foundation, sponsored by the Sports for Hope Foundation (SFHF) and supported by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association (HKSPA), the 2nd quarter awards presentation ceremony of the Outstanding Junior Athletes Awards (OJAA) 2023 was held today to acknowledge the achievements of the athletes.

Mr Ricky Cheng MH, Permanent Honorary President and Executive Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Shine Tak Foundation; Mr Eddie Leung Tin-fu, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Shine Tak Foundation; Ms Cecilia Yeung, Mr Zhao Rong and Mr Jhonny Leung Huang, Directors of Hong Kong Shine Tak Foundation; Mr Caspar Tsui Ying-wai, Senior Adviser of Hong Kong Shine Tak Foundation; Mr Wong Po-kee MH and Mr Philip Mok, Honorary Deputy Secretary General of the SF&OC; Ms Faye Chui, Vice-Chairman of the HKSPA; Mr Albert Shen, Executive Committee Member of Sports for Hope Foundation and Dr Trisha Leahy SBS BBS, Chief Executive of the HKSI attended the ceremony.

18 Q2 Awardees and 7 Athletes Received Certificate of Appreciation and Merit

A total of 18 junior athletes from 10 sports were crowned the OJAA title in the 2nd quarter. They are Jane Christa Ming Suet Karlsson and Li Tsz-to (Athletics), Wong Shun-yat and Chan Nok-sze (Fencing), Lau Arianna (Golf), Amber Wen Si Ward (Gymnastics), Ng Cheuk-yan (HKSAPD - Swimming), Hong Ka-lung (HKSAPD - Tenpin Bowling), Cheung Tsun-lok and Chui Ho-bon (HKSAPID - Swimming), Peter Tariq Jessop and Ma Yuk (Sailing), Chu Yan-ho, Fok Wang-hin, Chan Ho-wah and Mak Ming-shum (Table Tennis), Mok Pak-fan and Wong Ka-ho (Triathlon).

“It is always great when one’s achievements are recognised and appreciated. I will work hard to be selected to the World Cup Apparatus Series and Asian Championships in 2024, which are qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

This award boosts my confidence in competing in the international competitions and helps me enhance my performance and world ranking. I will prepare for the World Championships next year, hoping to achieve top rankings and medals.

“I am very happy with all the training hours that paid off. I will be training hard for the upcoming selection regatta aiming to qualify for the World Championships and Youth World Championships.”

“I feel honoured to receive the award and grateful for the coaches' hard work and dedication. The hard work of the athletes at the Hangzhou Asian Games also inspired me, I will train harder to do well in every competition.”

“I am glad and surprised by this award, thanks to the coaches, parents and the Shine Tak Foundation. My short-term goal is to achieve good results at the Asian Championship and I will get prepared by conducting more simulated competition training.”

Wong Ka-hoSilver Medal, Male Elite Junior Team, 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships

“Thanks to the resources of the HKSI and the attentive guidance of the coaches, which has helped me make progress. I hope to participate in various major sporting competitions in the future.”

In addition, two athletes were awarded the Certificate of Merit for this quarter, including Han Sophie (Golf) and Cheung Sum-yuet (Swimming), in recognition of their hard work. Five athletes were awarded the Certificate of Appreciation, including Tang Wai-lok and Wong Hon-yin (HKSAPID - Swimming), Wong Ho-chuen and Ho Tsun-kai (Kendo), and Yip Tak-long (Triathlon).

The OJAA recognises the achievements of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19 on a quarterly basis. Each winner is presented with a cash prize of HK$5,000, a sports voucher worth HK$2,500 and a certificate. For teams, they will receive a cash award of HK$20,000, a sport voucher worth HK$10,000 and certificates.

Being the Government’s designated organisation to provide the high-performance training system for eligible sports, the HKSI is committed to providing an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured, and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena and to inspire potential athletes to pursue a full-time sports career.
