Public Affairs & Marketing Manager

The Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited (“HKSI”) is the Government’s delivery agent to provide the high performance training system for eligible sports. The HKSI’s mission is to provide an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arena benchmarked at Major Games results. We are now inviting suitable candidates for the following vacancy:

The Job

Reporting to the Director, Community Relations & Marketing, the Public Affairs & Marketing Manager encompasses a wide range of responsibilities focused on promoting elite sports in Hong Kong and enhancing the Institute's global reputation. Duties include:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive public affairs and marketing strategies for branding, digital and social media, media communications, corporate events, and sponsorships to generate public interest in elite sports and inspire aspiring athletes;
  • Crisis Management: Design and execute crisis communication strategies to address negative publicity and safeguard the organization’s reputation, ensuring consistent messaging across all internal departments;
  • Spokesperson Duties: Serve as the organization’s spokesperson, providing public relations counsel to the HKSI Board and senior management, and managing media relations by drafting press releases, preparing executives for interviews, and responding to inquiries;
  • Promotional Initiatives: Lead the creation of publications and displays that promote the elite image of HKSI, inspiring both local and international visitors while boosting athlete morale;
  • Athlete Guidance: Provide professional advice to HKSI Scholarship Athletes regarding promotional opportunities, collaborations, and sponsorships, ensuring these do not interfere with their training;
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, National Sports Associations, media representatives, and potential sponsors;
  • Trend Monitoring: Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in public affairs, making recommendations for continuous improvement;
  • Department Administration: Oversee departmental administration, including budget preparation, resource allocation, and staff supervision, while effectively monitoring expenditures;
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the public affairs team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.

 

The Requirements

  • A university degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred;
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in public affairs, public relations, or related roles, preferably within the NGO, public, or sports sectors;
  • Proficiency in crisis communications and media relations, with the ability to think strategically and develop innovative solutions for reputation management challenges;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, National Sports Associations, media representatives, and potential sponsors;
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously;
  • Familiarity with government relations, corporate governance, and child protection is preferred;
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team to achieve organizational goals;
  • Highly adaptable and able to work under pressure and tight deadlines, with strong change management skills to swiftly re-prioritize based on emerging projects;
  • Excellent writing skills in Chinese and English, with fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, and the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively; and
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and media monitoring tools.
