Hong Kong Sports Institute and Hang Seng Bank Offer Cash Incentives to HK Medallists at Asian Games
The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and Hang Seng Bank are delighted to announce that achievements by Hong Kong athletes at the 17th Asian Games will be rewarded under the Hang Seng Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (Scheme). Expressing his gratitude for Hang Seng’s continuous support, Chairman of the HKSI Mr Carlson Tong, SBS, JP, said: “I am very grateful for Hang Seng’s tremendous support of local sports development and the Scheme truly represents a high level of recognition and encouragement to our athletes. We and all people in Hong Kong look forward to seeing brilliant performances by Hong Kong athletes after years of hard work.” Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank Ms Rose Lee, JP, said: “We are delighted to be working with our long-term partner HKSI to jointly recognise and reward outstanding Hong Kong athletes at the upcoming Asian Games. On behalf of Hang Seng, I would like to offer our warmest wishes to the Hong Kong delegation. We look forward to local athletes achieving remarkable results at the Games and to congratulating them on their triumphant return.” Under the Scheme, any Hong Kong athlete who wins a gold medal in an individual event will be awarded a cash incentive of HK$400,000, while silver and bronze medallists will receive HK$200,000 and HK$100,000 respectively. Teams that win gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented with cash awards of HK$800,000, HK$400,000 and HK$200,000 respectively. Initiated by the HKSI in 1994, the Scheme has been sponsored by Hang Seng Bank since 1996. The Scheme provides cash incentives to Hong Kong athletes who achieve outstanding performances at the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the National Games. The Scheme was expanded in 2005 to include medallists at the East Asian Games and, in 2010, medallists at the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, to further support the development of local sports. The Scheme has given out about HK$33 million to 410 top-performing Hong Kong athletes since 1996. The 17th Asian Games will be held from 19 September to 4 October 2014 in Incheon, Korea. The Games will include a total of 437 sporting events.
