HKSI Recognises Local Junior Athletes for Excelling at Nanjing Youth Olympics
In appreciation of the breakthrough results of the Hong Kong junior athletes at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) was honoured to welcome and congratulated the local medallists, including badminton player Ng Tsz-yau, fencers Choi Chun-yin (5th from left) and Chien Kei-hsu, swimmer Siobhan Bernadette Haughey and table tennis athletes Doo Hoi-kem (6th from left) and Hung Ka-tak (7th from left) for their success. At the ceremony, the HKSI presented scholarships to the athletes through the Youth Athletes Scholarship Award scheme on 19 November 2014. Following the presentation ceremony, Mr Carlson Tong SBS JP (5th from right), Chairman of the HKSI; Mr Kenneth Fok Kai-kong (4th from left), Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation, YOG; Ms Petty Lai Chun-yee (3rd from left), Principal Assistant Secretary (Recreation & Sport), Home Affairs Bureau, and other guests joined the top-performing athletes for a group photo to share the joy. At the Nanjing YOG, Hong Kong sent 18 juniors to compete with over 3,000 worldwide athletes, resulting in an impressive haul of 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze, proving their shining quality in the international sporting arena. Initiated by the HKSI in 2009, the Youth Athletes Scholarship Award, which is funded under the Hong Kong Athletes Fund, aims to provide scholarships to local young athletes who achieve outstanding performances at the YOG, Asian Youth Games and Asian Youth Para Games. Any Hong Kong athlete who wins a gold medal in an individual event at YOG will be awarded HK$30,000, while silver and bronze medalist will receive an amount of HK$20,000 and HK$10,000 respectively. Team events at YOG that win gold, silver or bronze medals will be awarded HK$42,000, HK$28,000 and HK$14,000 respectively. |
