Hydration and Exercise Performance

By Dr Wong Heung Sang, Stephen

The thermoregulatory mechanism of sweating is a common consequence. Exercise will result in a body water deficit unless it is replaced. In addition to water, athletes lose variable amounts of carbohydrates and electrolytes, of which sodium is the most important. This presentation will review the research evidence and address the particular hydration concerns for exercise performance. Also, suggestions will be provided on ideal hydration strategies as well as on areas for future research on this issue.
