Power output and muscle strength requirements of elite cycling

By Mr. Zhang Bai Ming

How much force is applied on the pedal during cycling? This is a question that cycling coaches have been asking continuously. Although answers can be found in the literature, most of them were obtained under laboratory conditions. This may not accurately reflect the situations during training and competition. In this presentation, we will try to investigate the pedaling force during various racing distances using SRM powermeter. The findings provide a good indicator on the strength requirement of the leg muscles of cyclists specialized in various racing distances.
