Practical Considerations When Working With Athletes With Physical Disabilities

By Dr. Stephanie Hanrahan

How can sport psychology techniques assist athletes with disabilities to achieve optimal performance? Can imagery help a blind athlete? What effect does a prosthetic have on an athlete's body awareness? Can imagery help this athlete's performance? Does it make any sense to apply the technique of abdominal breathing when working with a quadriplegic athlete who has no abdominal muscle function? These and other questions will be discussed in this presentation targeted at coaching and support staff and, of course athletes themselves.
